The Southern region of India has been blessed with several allures for the visitors that must be explored. What a better way to experience all this than going on-board, the Maharajas' Express and embark on tastefully-crafted journey, the Southern Jewels. An itinerary of 8 days, it takes you to some of the best south Indian destinations including Chettinad, Thanjavur, Mahabalipuram, Mysore, Hampi, and Goa at the Konkan coast. Some of the highlights of this tour are the magnificent mansions of Chettinad, UNESCO World heritage Site of Mahabalipuram, splendid ruins of Hampi, grandeur of the Mysore Palace, wonderful churches of Old Goa, and meals at special venues. The facilities on-board the train are world –class coupled with opulent interiors.

Embarkation & Disembarkation (The Southern Jewels)

Check-in Venue & Timing - Vivanta by Taj Hotel, Trivandrum / 1800 hrs

Departure Station & Timing - Trivandrum - Kochuveli Railway Station / 2115 hrs

Arrival Station & Timing - Mumbai - Chatrpati Shivaji Terminus / 0815 hrs

Guests boarding the Maharaja Express have to report at least an hour before the train's departure at a pre-assigned venue in Trivandrum for the pre-boarding facilities. All final details related to the meeting point will be emailed or handed over along with the journey's travel vouchers and documents, around 14 days before the departure date.

Day 1 Trivandrum (Saturday)

Maharajas Express

Assemble at 18:00 hours at Vivanta by Taj Hotel, Trivandrum for completing the registration and check in formalities to go aboard the Maharajas' Express. Now, proceed to the railway station for a traditional welcome. Enjoy your welcome drink, board the train and settle in your cabins. Dinner is served onboard. The journey starts from Trivandrum (Kochuveli Railway station) starts at 21:15 hours for reaching Chettinad, the home of the most prosperous trading community of South India, Chettiars.

Day 2 Chettinad/Karaikudi (Sunday)

Ajanta Caves

Enjoy your breakfast on-board as this Indian luxury train arrives in Chettinad. Later, get ready for sightseeing including the popular and magnificent Chettinad Mansions and Athnagudi Tile Factory for watch the local craftsmen making tiles with hands. Now continue the tour by visiting one of the Heritage Hotels of Chettinad for enjoying interesting activities like Henna Art, Mundu/Dhoti Draping, Sari Draping, and so on. Lunch on-board the Maharajas' Express. The evening is now at leisure. Indulge in facilities in the train. Relish sumptuous breakfast.

Day 3 Mahabalipuram (Monday)

City Palace

On day 3, breakfast is going to be served onboard. De-board from the train at around 08:00 hours for visiting the UNESCO World heritage Site of Mahabalipuram group of monuments. The historical port town was the place where sea trade with South Asian countries flourished. From the train station, the monuments are a 40-minute drive away. Visit the popular structures like Arjuna's Penance, 5 Rathas, and Shore Temple. Lunch has been planned at a special venue along with special folk dance performance. Back to the train while it proceeds to Mysore. Dinner is served on-board

Day 4 Mysore (Tuesday)

Jodhpur Fort

The day after breakfast is scheduled for visiting the magnificent Wodeyar Palace, which is popularly known as the Mysore Palace. One of the largest South Indian palace complexes, it is still the royal residence of the royal family of Mysore. The palace complex has various structures including well-maintained gardens, 2 ceremonial halls and a number of courtyards. Special lunch is planned at the Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel. This heritage property was constructed in 1920s by the Wodeyars especially for the Viceroy of India. Some of the popular structures here are a Ball room, a Viceroy hall and a restaurant. Later on, you can either be back to the comforts of Maharajas' Express or can visit Shreerangapatnam, the capital of Tipu Sultan. Back to the train for dinner. At 20:00 hours, Maharajas' Express starts its journey for Hampi.

Day 5 Hampi (Wednesday)

Cultural Performances

Today, breakfast is followed by a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi. A wonderful specimen of Dravidian style of architecture, these stone structures are located in a huge area. The temples here were constructed by the rulers of the Vijayanagar Empire. Some of the popular ones are Ganesha Statue, Virupaksha Temple, Narasimha Statute, and the Elephant Stables. Next, do not miss the Musical Pillars Temple and the Stone Chariot at the Vittala Temple complex. Enjoy a ride in Tuk tuk. Lunch on-board the train. At 15:45 hours, disembark to visit Anegudi Village, right across the Tungabhadra River. This wonderful village, dates back to the Neolithic age. Here, you can interact with the locals. Get a sneak peek into daily lifestyle. The other option is of enjoying a relaxing spa session at a popular city hotel. Be back on-board the Indian luxury train for dinner.

Day 6 Hampi – Goa (Thursday)

Amber Fort

The train arrives in Goa, early in the morning. Have your dinner in the train as the train passes by through wonderful vistas. The morning is at leisure. Enjoy the facilities on-board the train. After lunch, disembark from the train at around 16:00 hours for an evening of dance and music performances. On the way, visit the Goa Chitra Museum. This well-stocked museum has a wonderful private ethnographic collection of palanquins, carts, musical instruments, pottery and farming tools. Evening is scheduled for special Goan music and dance carnival, followed by dinner at a special venue. Back to the train.

Day 7 Goa (Friday)

Ranthambore National Park

On the 7th day, enjoy breakfast on-board the train. Later, embark on a sightseeing your of Goa including the UNESCO World Heritage site. Basilica of Bom Jesus. This Basilica preserves the mortal remains of Saint Francis Xavier. Next visit is to the Se Cathedral, located on the opposite road of the Basilica of Bom Jesus. Lunch is planned at a special venue. The Portuguese had built this cathedral to commemorate their victory over the Muslim army. Church visit is followed by a Walking Tour of the Old Panjim. The houses here are a wonderful mix of the Portuguese and Goan culture. Back to the train for a special evening with drinks and dinner. The journey back to Mumbai starts.

Day 8 Disembark in Mumbai (Saturday)
