Optional Excursions in Varanasi

One of the oldest living cities in India, Varanasi, also known as Kashi, is one of the holiest places in the world. As per Hindu mythology, Varanasi is associated with Lord Shiva, who is said to be the founder of Kashi. There is a mythical belief that the city of Kashi is balanced on the trident of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva has said that anyone who bathes in river Ganges flowing through the city of Kashi and burned in its funeral pyres would definitely achieve Moksha. The dead are cremated on the banks of Ganges and their ashes are submerged in the river. Varanasi, also known as the ‘Cultural Capital of India’, is the birth place of many prominent writers, philosophers and musicians who had lived here. There are around 1000 temples in Varanasi that were ransacked in the 12th century. The most famous of all is the famous ancient ‘Kashi Vishwanath Temple’ of Lord Shiva with a 16 meters long gold plate.
